As Edinburgh prepares to batten down the hatches ahead of the Fringe Festival in August, Birmingham’s Old Rep is giving punters a sample of what’s to come with it’s very own programme of stand-up comedy previews. Think of it as a fringe fringe.

Running 21 – 23 July, the preview season kicks off with a double bill of Julian Dean and Steve Bugeja. Bugeja’s Day Release follows the story of the time he went to a friend’s wedding and, on the way, had to pick up the bride’s dad who was leaving prison for the first time in 18 years. What’s unusual about that?

Wednesday 22 July will see Alex Smith – You and Your Wedding magazine’s resident groom – talk about the many trials and tribulations of the recently engaged. Alex will be followed by a set from the rather philosophical Ahir Shah who talks about anything from cigarettes and vegetarianism to extremism, depression and pirates.

The preview season concludes on Thursday 23 July with Edinburgh’s own BAFTA nominate, Iain Stirling, whose show Touchy Feely covers post-referendum Scotland and the last time he annoyed the armed forces. How many times can one man actually do that?

Tickets are available for a bargain £5 each – much cheaper than a trip up to Edinburgh that’s for sure.
