Well-loved musical Chitty Chitty Bang Bang flies back to Birmingham Hippodrome this month, giving audiences a sweet treat after the summer holidays.
There is no shortage of colour, creativity and magic as Ian Fleming’s classic tale about a former race car – and most importantly, the loving family who restore it – comes to life on stage.
Any Dream Will Do star Lee Mead shines in the main role of Caracracus Potts, a widowed father of two children who transforms the battered old race car into a floating and flying wonder.
YouTube sensation Carrie Hope Fletcher plays alongside him as Truly Scrumptious, a stubborn but lovable partner-in-crime set to protect his children and Chitty with fierce independence. And did we mention that she’s the daughter of candy factory owner Lord Scrumptious? There’s not much not to love about her!
Comic relief comes from Phill Jupitus and Claire Sweeney as the Baron and Baroness Bomburst, royalty from the fictional land of Vulgaria, where children are banned and the Baron can have all the toys to himself.
The state colour of this weird and wonderful place is purple that’s absolutely drenched in glitter. But it’s not all fairytales and dance numbers – evil takes a brilliant form in the creepy child catcher (Matt Gillett) who slinks his ways through each scene, snatching up children as he goes.
This nostalgic classic last played at Birmingham Hippodrome ten years ago, and will have fans of new and old singing along with each extravagant and heart-felt number.
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang will run at Birmingham Hippodrome until 18th September – you’d be Truly Potts to miss it! For more information and to buy tickets, visit http://www.birminghamhippodrome.com or call 0844 338 5000.
