Warhammer 40,000

Warhammer 40,000 ninth edition revealed

Galactic news from Games Workshop today as it revealed details about a brand new edition for Warhammer 40,000.

The announcement was made in true style with a pretty fantastic trailer featuring Battle Sisters, Space Marines and the return of an old enemy, the Necrons.

While the initial announcement has been made, details (as always) are a bit thin on the ground. So, what do we know?

Well first up, the new edition works with all existing codexes *wipes brow* and Psychic Awakening books, meaning you can dive right in without having to buy new rules for your army.

“I really can’t wait for the new edition of Warhammer 40,000 to get into our hobbyists’ hands. We’ve been working on this for such a long time, listening to what the community wants, and doesn’t want, from the game and the galaxy. With all that information and a few exciting new developments, I believe we’ve made the game better than it’s ever been.

The new edition works seamlessly with all existing codexes and Psychic Awakening books, which is particularly important as we still have three more Psychic Awakening books to go! They were all written with the new rules in mind, so you can explore these dark new events knowing all your existing rules will work when the new edition finally arrives.”

Secondly, there’s a new battle system called Crusade, which, from the hints we’ve seen, runs like a campaign mode, allowing you to level up and upgrade your characters as they progress through a story-like-mode.

There will be more command points – because everyone loves a good command point or two. And tanks can now shoot in combat – which is pretty good news when you’re being swarmed by Greenskins.

Terrain has also been rebuilt, providing units with additional benefits when preparing for that surprise attack or trying to take cover.

Edition 9 also sees the launch of a brand new website as well as a new app.

This is going to be the most comprehensive digital support any of our games has ever had. Expect to find an army builder, rules for your collections, and more so you can travel light on your way to game night.

So, what are you hoping has changed in edition 9? Any gripes with edition 8 that you wish Games Workshop would fix? Well hopefully we won’t have to wait too long before more reveals.
